The sustainability report is developed to state our commitment and explain our journey towards sustainability. Siddiq Leather Works aims to produce highest quality leather for customers by ensuring adherence to social and environmental standards. Siddiq Leather Works have been in leather business for more than 40 years. The organization has been to excel by providing value to its customers, employees, and shareholders. The organization aims to sustain its growth and excellence.

Siddiq Leather Works perceive the sustainability in three dimensions

ENVIRONMENT

Siddiq Leather Works has been leading the leather industry regarding taking initiatives to reduce the environmental impact it has reduced application of chemicals to raw hides. Tanning process does not use any prohibited chemicals Chrome recovery and water treatment plant reduce environment impact SLW strictly adheres to NEQs of Pakistan Furthermore, SLW has taken steps to shift toward solar energy to partially fulfil its electricity and water heating needs. The company further aims to operate in a sustainable way for the environment. SLW is using lime recycling system and now furthuer added soak water recycling system in order to conserve water and move towards reduced discharge.

SOCIAL

Social Compliance is part of SLW mission to become the market leader in the industry. The company ensures social compliance by ensuring that each worker even at the lowest level is paid salary that is above Pakistan’s minimum wage requirements. It further provides health and life insurance, provident fund and annual bonuses for all the employees. It provides subsidized food and pick-and-drop facilities to its employees. Furthermore, the company ensures that workplace is safe and healthy to work.

ECONOMIC

Siddiq Leather Works has been innovating over the years to the economic sustainability of the business. It has aggressively pursued by presenting products in all international leather and shoe fairs. It has developed and improved R&D center to introduce new leather articles as well as quality enhancement of existing articles. The company has reduced its production costs by partially shifting to alternative energy solutions and by installing chrome recovery plant. These initiatives ensure that company maintains sound economic performance.

Rawhides / Tanning

The use of chemicals in tanning of rawhides is reduced part by salt reduction and minimization the effluent. The company has decreased the usage of salt by 15% in 2016. The company further aims to reduce by 26% in 2017. SLW ensures to continuously improve processes and become more efficient

Chemicals

SLW has successfully achieved 10% reduction in sulfide usage by making incremental changes in the process. It was enabled by efficient using of Lime Recycling Plant. About 95% of the solid waste is recovered from discharge using sludge filters. Chrome recovery plant is operational to eliminate chrome from water discharge. Water

Siddiq Leather Works has installed Water Treatment Plant, and Lime Recycling Plant and soak water recycling system in an effort to stop the discharge of chemicals and harmful substances in water. Furthermore, the consumption of water has been reduced over the years from 400 liters/m2 to 290 liters/m2 then to 205 liters/m2 and now further reducing to 169 liters/m2

Energy

The company has taken steps towards efficient utilization of energy. The old machines are periodically replaced to minimize the energy usage. Furthermore, SLW has shifted to renewable energy sources as environment friendly source of energy. It has installed solar thermal and solar PV Solutions to share the energy needs with electricity grid. Solar energy allows the organization to reduce the emission of carbon content in the environment. The emission of CO2 is reduced by 300,000kg annually. The installations are further increased to reduce dependence on community power supply

CLEAN ENERGY INITIATIVES

Energy sources are becoming one of the leading contributors to the global warming. There has been an increase in awareness in the leather industry and it has started to shift from conventional to renewable energy sources. Solar energy provides one of the important energy sources in Pakistan due to a large number of radiation hours. Siddiq Leather Works is the industry leader in introducing solar energy. It has installed solar thermal water heating system for increasing the temperature of water up to 60 C. The electricity requirements are mostly fulfilled by Installation of solar PV solutions during daytime.

better, Cleaner and safer energy for our planet

Solar PV Solutions
SLW has installed 1 MW of Solar PV solutions.we have installed more than 1 MW solar generation system equal to plantation of 143,000 trees. Not only this we have also put up myawaki forest in slw. It produces around 1,500,000 KWHs of energy in an on-grid system. This production reduces 300,000 kg of CO2 emission annually

Solar Thermal Solutions

SLW has installed 95,000 liters of solar water heating system. It heats water up to 60 C. It reduces CO2 emission by 190,000 kg annually. SLW has also installed solar air heating system, in solar air heating thermic oil is being heated upto 150 C which is use to dry the Leather.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Siddiq Leather Works has employed more than 381 employees. They enjoy a wide range of facilities and benefits. As a result, the company has been able to keep the employee turnover below 2%. On an average, employees have spent more than 10 years at Siddiq Leather Works. Siddiq Leather has accumulated an experience of 8000 man-years in Leather manufacturing. SLW has also installed latest fire fighting and alarm system.

Cost Savings Initiatives

Siddiq Leather Works is able to reduce energy costs by shifting to solar thermal and PV systems. The fuel and electricity costs are reduced as a result Siddiq leather products are becoming more cost effective. Water usage leads to significant costs. Siddiq leather has cut water content in an effort preserve environment and reduce cost. The chrome recovery plant has led to 0.83 million PKR annual cost savings
